I have personally restored several machines as a hobby, starting with a 1976 Bally Eight Ball that I purchased for $500. Unfortunately, it was non-functional, and I invested an additional $600 to repair it. It’s important to exercise caution, as some older machines may not be worth the effort to restore, and sourcing certain parts, particularly playfield components, can be challenging.
How much does it really cost to buy a pinball machine for personal use?
While many electronic components, such as boards and solenoids, are readily available, I advise potential buyers to have a genuine interest in maintenance and possess a fundamental understanding of electronics, soldering skills, and the ability to interpret wiring diagrams. Parts for Bally and Williams machines are generally easier to find, whereas components for Gottlieb, Stern, and Data East machines can be more elusive.
Typically, the price range for a functioning machine from 1976 to 1999 falls between $1,000 and $6,000. Recently, I completed a restoration of a 1993 Williams Star Trek: The Next Generation, which is now valued at approximately $5,000.
